The village of Cartmel is truly idyllic, with a picturesque market square surrounded by a delightful assortment of genuine olde-worlde buildings including inns, shops and private dwellings. Ancient streets wend their way from the square with quiet flower-filled corners, delightful streamside walks, hump-backed bridges and cobbled pavements.
The village is famous for its 12th Century Priory with beautiful stained glass windows, modern sculptures, and ancient choir stalls. The Cartmel Priory Gatehouse, now a Heritage Centre, depicts the history of the monastery and the village. Around the main square, and the narrow winding streets leading from it, are numerous and interesting buildings.

The village also houses a variety of charming shops including The Larch Tree with its amazing flying mobiles, The Gift Emporium with its high class giftware, The Barn with its vast array of Dolls Houses and enough antique shops to browse around and not forgetting the village shop, home to the famous Sticky Toffee Pudding, has shelves laden with local produce and pastries.

Cartmel hosts its highest popular steeple chase meetings at the spring and summer bank holidays with another one day meeting in July. The course at Cartmel is a left handed oval of about one mile one furlong, which is bisected by the finishing straight. The run in at just over four furlongs is the longest in the country and with the tight nature of the bends, undulating contours and carnival atmosphere all around, races at Cartmel are very exciting.

Cartmel is ideally located for exploring the beautiful countryside of the South Lakes and all its attractions like the Haventhwaite railway, Holker Hall, Levens Hall and the award winning Aquarium of the Lakes at Newby Bridge, approximately 4 miles away. At Lakeside on Windermere you can take a pleasure cruise on the lake or if you are in need of retail therapy you have a choice of Kendal or Ulverston, just 20 minutes away by car.
